How do I obtain a skilled migrant visa?

Once you have identified which occupation is relevant to your qualifications and experience, you can begin the process of obtaining a skilled migrant visa.

Can I apply for the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) if I have received an invitation from the government while having an outstanding application for State nomination?

Yes, you can apply for a Subclass 189 visa. In such cases, your application for State nomination will be automatically declined. However, the application fee will not be refunded.

Can I include my volunteer work experience to meet the skilled work experience requirement?

No, volunteer work experience is not considered to be skilled work experience. Only paid skilled work experience of at least 20 hours per week is considered.

Can I submit another application if I have been nominated by the state government?

No.

How can I apply for permanent residency if I'm a state nominated Subclass 489 holder?

You can apply for a permanent Skilled Regional visa (Subclass 887) if you meet other requirements for this visa to be granted. Before applying, you must have lived in a regional area of Australia for two years and worked full-time for at least one year in a regional area.

How can I apply for permanent residency if I'm a state nominated Subclass 491 holder?

You can apply for a Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (Subclass 191) if you meet other requirements for this visa to be granted. Before applying, you must have lived in a designated regional area of Australia for at least three years and have a taxable income above a specific income threshold for at least three years.

What is the process to obtain a skilled migrant visa?

  1. Obtain a skills assessment that positively shows your qualifications and relevant work experience to your nominated occupation;

  2. Ensure you have met the minimum number of points required at the time you intend to lodge your expression of interest. The Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) opposes additional points cut-offs for occupations where there is lower demand

  3. Lodge your expression of interest through SkillSelect;

  4. Skilled Nominated Visa subclass 190 only: be nominated by a state or territory government. The process varies depending on the state or territory;

  5. Once an invitation is received, you have 60 days to lodge an application for the visa through the SkillSelect portal.
